'We Will Not Fail- A Tribute to American Spirit'
The title for Mr. Scafidi's painting seemed perfect for his montage. During our nation's short history, those words have resonated throughout America to overcome tragedy.
December 2001 Don Scafidi wrote:
"Like many of you, the most depressing images my old eyes have ever seen are from December 7, 1941 and September 11, 2001. The 50 year span of these attacks was not lost on me. As a 73 year old native New Yorker, retired Naval Officer and son of a New York fire-fighter, I realized I could only use my anger artistically.
I know it is painful to look upon this depiction. It was just as painful to create. As the painting grew in my mind, it became apparent that I must depict the grotesque attacks at Pearl Harbour and Ground Zero in order to portray the Divine Spirit of America. The indefatigable American spirit is exemplified by the Flag Raisings at Mt. Suribachi and Ground Zero. I dedicate this painting to ALL heroes living or deceased. You will never be forgotten. "
IN FEBRUARY 2002, Mr. Scafidi donated the original 36x24" oil painting to the New York City Fire Museum which hangs in their permanent collection. He not only sold prints for charities, but sent out about 1500 prints to victim's families, firemem, firehouses, first responders, police stations, and soldiers after the start of the war. 30 framed prints hang hang in Post Offices, Firehouses and Police Stations in the Virgin Islands.
